There are 5 days left before Kenya’s 2022 elections, and political candidates are trying to press home their messages before candidates vote.
One of the two leading frontrunners, William Ruto, campaigned in Kapkatet, in Kericho County on 24 July 2022. Ruto leads the Kenya Kwanza coalition. His main rival for the presidency is Raila Odinga, a former prime minister. Odinga leads the Azimio la Umoja coalition.
On the morning of 24 July 2022, a Twitter account that supports Ruto’s party, the United Democratic Alliance, tweeted about the rally:
“Kapkatet is already full… The 5th president H.E William Ruto, Deputy President H.E Rigathi Gachagua and all Kenya kwanza brigades will attend. A NEW KENYA, A NEW NATION AND A HAPPY KENYA WILL BE BORN ON 9/8/2022.”
Did the photo show the crowd at Kapkatet?
A reverse image search of the photo reveals it was published by a Pinterest page that mentioned a major musical concert called Summer Jam, which was held on 28 July 1973 in Watkins Glen, New York. A reported 600,000 people attended.
The photo is widely reproduced in websites that reported on the concert. The green and yellow concert stage can also be seen from multiple angles.
The photo is nearly 50 years old and does not show William Ruto’s supporters at a Kapkatet rally in August 2022.
