Kenya’s 2022 election campaign has reached its final lap. Less than a week remains before Kenyans vote in their leaders.
The two frontrunners in the race for the presidency, William Ruto and Raila Odinga, are campaigning hard. Odinga, who leads the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition, campaigned in Kisii County to the west of Kenya, on 2 August 2022.
Days before the Kisii vote hunt, a letter apparently authored by Kisii county’s governor, James Ongwae, started doing the rounds on social media. The governor had switched from Odinga’s Azimio coalition to Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza coalition, it read.
“Kisii is UDA. The second GOVERNOR is Machogu Kabogo Mudavadi Meru #Luonyanza yUDA,” one user tweeted.
The KEG Fact-Checking desk spoke to the governor about the letter. Ongwae forcefully denied writing it and noted the letter was unsigned, calling it “malicious succession popaganda.”
The governor also directed us to his Facebook page, where he denounced the letter in a live video. “Those linking me to UDA are just Day dreamers. Ignore and stick to AZIMIO LA UMOJA and let’s make BABA the 5th Our next President,” Ongwae wrote.
