A newspaper front page shared on Twitter carried claims of an affair between a presidential candidate William Ruto and the Senator for Nakuru County.
The front page, which is made to resemble the Nairobian, published by the Standard Group, claimed that Susan Kihika was pregnant.
The Kenya Editors Guild Fact checking desk looked into the newspaper front page. A headline on the left of the page reads “Igathe: Nairobians are just too sad for life, Polycarp just wants to make them happy”.
This is the headline of a real story that was published on 27 May 2022 and is contained in the 27 May to June 2 2022 edition of the Nairobian. The main headline of this edition is “Migori opens ‘Green Lodge’” and does not include William Ruto or Susan Kihika. The page matches the one shared on Twitter except for the lead story which is edited.
The Standard newspaper discredited the manipulated front page on its Facebook page. “Be cautious NOT to fall for political propaganda and deep fakes during this electioneering season,” the newspaper cautioned readers.
