Lead the Charge in a Transformative Era for Media
As Kenya’s media landscape navigates *unprecedented challenges—from digital disruption and shrinking revenues to threats against press freedom—the Kenya Editors’ Guild (KEG) is seeking a strategic, innovative, and resilient Chief Executive Officer to redefine its leadership in this critical moment.
With a strong foundation built since 2019, KEG is now poised to scale its impact, safeguard media independence, and drive sustainable models for journalism excellence. This role demands a leader who understands the intersection of technology, policy, and storytelling—and can position KEG as the leading voice for ethical, impactful journalism.
Why This Role Matters Now
The Challenge
- Kenya’s information ecosystem is at a crossroads:
- Erosion of Trust: Rising misinformation and politicized narratives demand credible, fact-based journalism.
- Financial Pressures: Traditional revenue models are collapsing, yet public interest journalism has never been more vital.
- Safety & Freedom: Journalists face increasing threats, requiring stronger advocacy and legal safeguards.
- Digital Transformation: Audiences are shifting—how can KEG empower editors to innovate without compromising ethics?
The Opportunity
KEG is uniquely positioned to lead change. Under your leadership, the Guild will:
- Strengthen Media Viability – Pilot new funding models (membership, philanthropy, blended finance) to reduce donor dependency.
- Defend Press Freedom – Expand advocacy for journalist safety, push back against repressive laws, and leverage partnerships with regional/global bodies.
- Future-Proof Journalism – Drive training on AI, digital verification, and audience engagement to keep Kenyan journalism competitive.
- Amplify Influence – Deepen KEG’s role in shaping policy (e.g., Media Council reforms, access to information laws).
- Unify the Sector – Foster collaboration among guilds, independent media, and tech platforms to strengthen self-regulation.
KEG’s Track Record: A Platform for Greater Impact
Since 2019, KEG has:
- Built institutional resilience – From a one-person secretariat to a 7-member team, plus a KSh 9M reserve fund.
- Trained 3,000+ journalists – Elevating standards in elections, climate, and judicial reporting.
- Launched critical tools – including Africa’s first Climate Change Reporting Manual and Court Reporting Guidelines.
- Championed regional solidarity – Founding the Eastern Africa Editors Society (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia).
- Steered national debates – Leading the Kenyan Presidential Debates Secretariat and launching KEG’s own Presidential Debates (2025).
Now, we need a CEO who can leverage this foundation to tackle tomorrow’s challenges.
Who We’re Looking For
- Proven experience steering organizations through complex change (media/NGO/corporate).
- Deep understanding of Kenya’s media laws, digital trends, and sustainability challenges.
- Advocacy prowess – Ability to engage policymakers, donors, and multilateral institutions (UN, AU).
- Innovation & Execution:
- Track record in fundraising – Grants, partnerships, or entrepreneurial revenue models.
- Familiarity with tech’s impact on media – AI, audience analytics, or digital storytelling.
- Commitment to KEG’s mission – Protecting free speech while fostering accountability.
Diplomacy & Influence:
Unifier – Can bridge divides between legacy media, digital startups, and regulators.
Crisis-tested – Navigates threats to press freedom with tact and courage.
This is more than a CEO role—it’s a chance to redefine journalism’s future in Africa. If you’re ready to lead with vision, resilience, and impact, we want to hear from you.
