Kenya Editors Guild Holds 2026 AGM, Presents 2025 Annual Report

The Kenya Editors Guild (KEG) convened its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on April 18, 2026, at Daystar University, Nairobi campus, bringing together members to reflect on the state of the media and chart the Guild’s future direction.

A key highlight of the AGM was the presentation of the Guild’s 2025 Annual Report by President Zubeidah Kananu, who underscored a year marked by resilience, institutional growth, and sustained advocacy.

“Throughout the year, we remained resolute in defending press freedom, advancing media sustainability, and equipping journalists with the skills necessary to navigate an increasingly dynamic and evolving media landscape,” Kananu said.

The report details a period defined by intensified efforts to safeguard journalists’ rights amid rising threats, including harassment, injuries, and destruction of equipment during coverage of public events. In response, KEG strengthened engagement with state and non-state actors, development partners, and the diplomatic community to push for accountability and improved protection mechanisms.

Beyond advocacy, the Guild expanded its capacity-building programmes, focusing on digital transformation, cybersecurity awareness, and specialized reporting, including climate change and biotechnology. Strategic partnerships—such as collaborations with the Media Council of Kenya and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission—further reinforced KEG’s role as a central convener in the media ecosystem.

The report also highlights internal reforms following the 2025 elections, including a constitutional review process and strengthened governance structures aimed at enhancing transparency and institutional resilience.

On media sustainability, KEG pointed to ongoing financial pressures facing newsrooms, emphasizing the need for diversified revenue models to safeguard editorial independence. Membership growth, which reached 316 by the end of 2025, was cited as a sign of confidence in the Guild’s mission and leadership.

Looking ahead, the Guild is prioritizing preparations for the 2027 General Elections, with targeted training programmes planned to support journalists—many of whom will be covering elections for the first time—in an increasingly complex information environment.

The AGM reaffirmed KEG’s commitment to strengthening press freedom, promoting ethical journalism, and building a more resilient and future-ready media sector in Kenya.
