With less than a fortnight to the general elections, misinformation has been shared on social media platforms.
While candidates have been targeted, the chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has not been spared.
A digital card purportedly created by NTV Kenya circulated on social media. In it IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati announces his resignation, citing his inability to conduct a free and fair election in August.
“IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati resigns. Says he is unable to deliver a free and fair election due to pressure from UDA and divided commission,” the card dated 25 July 2022 stated.
NTV Kenya flagged the digital card as fake and tweeted the image with “Fake” stamped on it, captioned: “ Beware of fake news! If it’s not on our official social media pages, it’s fake.”
